AA House

ALVENTOSA MORELL ARQUITECTES | JOSEP MA. ALVENTOSA, MARC ALVENTOSA,

Description Technical file

The determination to integrate this project into the typical urban landscape of a small village in the Baix Empordà region is at the heart of the different options adopted in the strategy of its architecture.

The AA House was designed as a second residence and is situated in the small village of Ullà, in the Baix Empordà region, where stone and exposed brick constructions predominate.
The plot on which the construction stands enjoys a northsouth orientation, is affected by the powerful tramontane winds and has a single access road, the one that links Ullà to the neighbouring towns of L’Escala and Torroella de Montgrí. The project’s goal is to design a house integrated into a landscape configured by a typical suite of houses in the centre of the village, creating an intimate atmosphere far removed from the road traffic. At the same time, it was also a priority to design a bioclimatic dwelling that would make the most of the site’s climatic conditions so that as much comfort as possible could be obtained.
The limit between the plot and the access road is a wall made from local stone that has only two openings: the pedestrian access gate and the garage gate. This compact wall provides insulation from the noise of the road while protecting the house from the strong winds.
The proposal is generated by a wall and two strips delimiting some highly specific uses: the first strip contains the wet areas and the services and the second strip the main open-plan space (kitchen, dining room and living room) and the bedrooms. As for the internal walls, they were erected with a dry construction system to adapt this second strip to the passage of time and the needs of the clients. This means that the open-plan space of the kitchen-dining-living-room can grow depending on the number of bedrooms needed in the future (currently it is 4 bedrooms).
The construction system was based on load-bearing walls made from manual exposed brick or local stone supporting the concrete forgings in the first strip, a 12-cm slab in the second strip and a 16-cm-thick forging made from concrete beams cast in situ.
