A cliff house for a family

Description Technical file

This project for a cliff-side family house in Mallorca’s Port de Sóller could be described as a cinema room in which the programming depends on the climatic whims of the sea and the landscape.

This is a small plot measuring 20m wide by 20m deep, on an incline of almost 100% and with neighbours on both sides, but it enjoys some of the best vistas in Mallorca: the bay of Port de Sóller and the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, one next to the other like on a cinemascope screen. The project can as a whole be described as a suspended concrete box resting against a traditional dry-stone wall, and what happens inside this box and around it constitutes the script for its story. The box is protected from sunlight and is provided with privacy by a ceramic lattice.
The box contains the three bedrooms of the house; the living area sits behind them, protected inside the mountain in a double space. Below the box are the kitchen, dining room, terrace and swimming pool, blurring the limits of what is inside and what is outside.
The huge sliding glass doors, which can be concealed inside the stone walls, fully open up the living room and make it one with the terrace. The lack of columns and the proportion of the space frame the views, transforming them into the true star of the project.
Very simple materials were used in order to facilitate the relationship between the cliff, the vistas and the users. Concrete thus defines most of the spaces, together with small stone details in the window frames, bathrooms and staircase. As a contrast, the colour white is used on each wall, door and plasterboard as well as on the metal staircase that connects the living room with the bedrooms.
The plot consists of terraces built of stone walls on which rest the concrete boxes, giving rise to a transition between the landscape and the building.
