Urbanization of the surroundings of the Baluard del Migdia

LOLA DOMÈNECH, CONXITA BALCELLS

Description Technical file

Subtlety and restraint are the qualifiers that define this interesting public space exercise, part of the functional objective of addressing the unevenness caused by the recovery of elements of archaeological value.

This project has two key goals; on one hand, recovering and integrating the urban spaces around Estación de Francia train station and, on the other, the old bastion of Baluard del Migdia, connecting
two centrally located districts of Barcelona that were historically disconnected at this location: the Ribera and Barceloneta neighbourhoods.
The new public spaces, at the foot of recently-erected buildings, will gather a functional programme for strolling and leisure and will enhance the city’s architectural heritage with the recovery of the old
bastion of Baluard del Migdia.
The presence of the archaeological structures of the old bastion of Baluard del Migdia (16th century), the Muralla de Mar wall and the counterscarp from the early 18th century configure a new urban landscape. The project condenses and resolves the area of the old bastion, creating a viewing balcony and an access ramp restricted to specific visits. The archaeological findings have discovered that the sea used to reach this point in the 3rd century and that it was suitable for navigation until the 15th century, when a breakwater was constructed. The earth gained ground over the sea and the Baluarddel Migdia bastion and maritime fortification were constructed between the 16th and 19th
century.
The intervention recovers the archaeological ensemble of the old waterfront, displaying the lower level of the original trench between the walls and simultaneously creating an urban space along the perimeter of the upper level that provides views over these assets and their context.
The area adjacent to the old Estación de Francia train station, occupied until now by a parking lot, is transformed into a public space for pedestrians, open and accessible, enabling a connection to the Barceloneta neighbourhood and incorporating an extensive leisure area under a new copse of white-flowering trees.
