Santa Barbara Market

Javier Bárcena, José Antonio Barroso, Raquel Mielgo y Luis Zufiaur

Description Technical file

This project’s greatest appeal results from its particular location within the urban grid, since this intervention works to favour the context, aiming to contribute to the city’s coherence rather than to provide a personalised expression of its design.
At the time of winning the commission, the building was in a state of decayed obsolescence. The structure was damaged and reforming it had become a matter of urgency even though the market remained open to the public. The brief was to give the building greater visibility and to make it more attractive to a younger public while maintaining the traditional character of a long-established market.
Seeking to respect its overall geometry as well as its concrete structure and façade in order to emphasise its proportions, order, harmony, rhythm and scale, it was decided to envelop the existing building in a steel and glass box. This allowed the circulations to be enlarged and simplified and brought light and life into the interior.
This shell is brought forward in the south orientation to create a double-height space that operates as a filter and protection from the exterior. A place for convergence and exhibition that operates as a protected agora, an indoor extension of the outdoor plaza.
The materials create a fine space filled with unique experiences. The palette employed reflects the simplicity and clarity of the design; the existing concrete is painted in white on the walls and in black on the ceilings; a single ceramic format gives a uniform look to the floors; in the double-height zones the ceilings are dignified with natural untreated wood; the stalls share lighting and signage; finally, the steel and glass of the shell give the market freshness and visibility.
The architecture integrates into its context, creating a new and unique place, establishing a dialogue with the city, the different seasons and the times of the day.
