Corella butcher’s shop

Tarruella Trenchs Studio

Description Technical file

This project emerged from the determination to create a space that would recover the idea of the artisan, traditional offering of yore in which quality, transparency in the processes and the visibility of the production were indispensable requisites.

This second shop of the Corella family is located in old premises in the centre of Sant Cugat in which the construction of ceramic vaults and beams, together with masonry walls, plays a central role. To this end all existing elements where painted in off-white so as to unify the above-mentioned constructional elements and thus enhance the product.

The project’s main objective was to give the premises a maximum of transparency and visibility in reference to the company’s philosophy. To achieve this, the workroom has been visually connected with the sales area by a glass enclosure fitted in a sash-operated iron frame that is also connected to the exterior. It was located next to the façade so that the clients could view at all times from the street the artisan process of preparing the meat, something that had been lost over the years.

Reinforcing this concept of visibility, and as an enticement, the wooden joinery of the façade was painted in a cauldron red colour. This red frame is repeated as the hallmark of the butcher’s shop, both in the packaging and in the corporate image designed by Fauna.

Facing the street, two tasting bars encourage clients to taste the shop’s products while waiting for their order to be prepared. As a backdrop to this tasting bar, a set of hanging iron boxes in different sizes and depths display the shop’s products and enhance the existing stone wall.

The entire premises are lit up with spotlights that highlight the product and the textures of the walls, while above the displays are industrial-style hanging fluorescent lamps that reinforce the lighting of the product while giving the space the same cauldron red hue of the façade joinery. Finally, the lavatories are open to the interior of the establishment, including the recovery of an old cattle trough as a washbasin for public use.
