Pepito Grillo Restaurant in Terminal T4 of Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport

Sandra Tarruella, interiorista

Description Technical file

This restaurant, situated in a space with intense pedestrian traffic, an airport terminal, is visually prominent thanks to its volumetric layout over two levels as well as its elaborate graphic design and the elegant use of its materials.
The main challenge of this project consisted of capturing and attending to the clientele that frequents these areas, most of them with an “executive professional” profile. To this end, the preparation of hot and cold dishes, desserts and drinks has been distributed around various points of the space occupied by the intervention. This polarises the activity while manifesting its appeal.
The project is essentially developed over two levels: at the terminal’s floor height is the kitchen, so that its activity can be viewed at all times by the diners, a white marble bar counter for drinks and coffees and a black-lacquered steel shelving unit for storing wines. On a platform accessed via a three-step staircase is the actual dining area, which is in turn divided into small areas organised according to the type of furniture: individual tables, circular tables and rectangular tables for small groups and, finally, communal tables with sliding benches.
Wood and iron are prominent in this project and give it a comfortable ambience, with a minimalist touch of sophistication to which also contribute the deployé of the shelving, the white marble of the bar counter and the porcelain stoneware of the flooring. Also noteworthy is the oak wood used for the floor of the platform, arranged in a type of break-up that creates a patchwork of slats going up the wall to create a mural as a backdrop.
The design is a series of wood and leather chairs and stools that, together with the dark hue of the steel used for the shelving, leads to a colour fusion with the terminal’s ceiling, formed of wooden slats and yellow girders.
The final detail is the presence of a series of screens that, in the manner of flight information panels, announce the dishes and the day’s menu.
