El Cobijo rural house

Description Technical file

The radical appearance of a ceramic lattice in the back façade of this intervention characterises the project without thereby causing an aggression in a rural setting of unique historic and landscape value.

The project started from a building that was virtually in ruins, of which only the main façade dating from the 16th century and listed by Historical Heritage remained in good condition, together with a masonry pit in a perfect state of conservation. A unique space which was dedicated to conserving wine thanks to its characteristics of humidity and temperature.

The commission consisted of designing a rural home to be let by the week or by the weekend, seeking to make the most of what was there. A premise for undertaking the project was the reduced budget, which led to an intervention based on low-cost materials that permitted enhancing the existing elements.

A lightweight staircase located in the centre of the building articulates the space along all the storeys and is transformed into the central element of this intervention: on the ground floor it separates the dining room-kitchen from the living room-entrance hall, on the first floor the en-suite bedrooms from the single bedrooms and on the second floor the play area from the master bedroom and its terrace.

The dining room-kitchen area takes centre stage in this project in order to highlight the gastronomic and wine culture that is so deep-rooted in the region. To this end a large, ample kitchen has been designed, fitted with a great “island” that connects with a dining table in oak wood.

In the pit space, damp, with a constant temperature and little light, a relaxation and resting pool has been installed, recreating the atmosphere of a wine cellar with softly glowing lighting.

To complete the programme, the changing rooms for the pit pool and the machinery room were installed in the semi-basement floor, in some old wine stores discovered during the excavation.

As regards the materials, the project uses as few as possible in order to highlight the sandstone of the façade and party walls. Oak wood, the same as that used for wine casks, together with varnished black iron, were the other materials predominating in the intervention. Lastly, a polished continuous concrete floor unifies all the floors.

In the back façade, a brick lattice curtain filters the light and provides privacy for the bedrooms. A single window in the second floor frames the valley landscape in the play area.
