House on the Cliff

Fran Silvestre, arquitecto

Description Technical file

The project for this house, which hangs in the air above the water of the Mediterranean sea and is endowed with an expressionism of sculptural characteristics, reveals a meditated effort of architectural adaptation in a difficult topographic location.

This project began as a solution to a problem posed by the client, who sought to build a single-storey dwelling on tremendously abrupt terrain with a slope of nearly eighty per cent, in which the visual connection with the nearby Mediterranean sea acquired prime importance.

Given the powerful slope of the plot and the determination to build a single-storey house, the architect chose a design with a three-dimensional structure comprised of a series of reinforced concrete screens and slabs that adapt to the topography, entailing as little earth moving as possible. This monolithic structure anchored in the rock generates a horizontal platform at the level of access from the street, on which the house stands.

The area occupied by the swimming pool is at a lower level, on a flat part of the plot.

The concrete structure is thermally insulated on its external face with smooth, flexible white lime stucco, like the rest of the finishes. All other materials, walls, floors and roof gravel maintain the same colour to emphasise the building’s unitary character.

The treatment of the interior spaces essentially consists of giving natural light a protagonist role. This is achieved by strategically situating windows and glass panes that, together with the white hues of the walls, give the whole a special degree of luminosity.

Of this eye-catching building, what surprises is the cantilevered structure that turns virtually the whole house into a framed vantage point that projects and receives the sea views. Another remarkable aspect is the lateral zone occupied by a terrace in which the use of white Almeria marble builds a diaphanous space highlighted by the presence of an overflow pool that merges the water’s surface line with the horizon and the sea.
