Rehabilitation of the Chapel of the Congregation

Josep Mª Esquius, arquitecto

Description Technical file

Common sense and knowledge of the building are the hallmarks of this interesting rehabilitation exercise carried out in the Chapel of the Congregation, part of the Ripoll Monastery, in Girona.
This project consists of the recovery and rehabilitation of a baroque chapel, which is adjoined to the Ripoll Monastery and has a partially collapsed structure, with the objective of transforming the whole into a centre for cultural activities and tourist services.
The building’s roofs had undergone modifications which concealed its baroque floor plan from the outside and subjected the domes to inadequate structural forces.
Therefore it was necessary to return the building to a correct structural state, while providing it with suitable access on a vertical axis, between its floors, and horizontally, to Abat Oliva plaza and Paseo de Elias Rogent behind the building.
With the objective of avoiding any sort of typological deformation to the main spaces, that is, the Chapel of the Congregation and the sacristy, the staircase was positioned in the building’s only “neutral” area, the rear. With the intention of allowing for the passage of natural light through the roof’s skylight down to the bottom floor, the steps and landings have been designed using translucent glass.
The Chapel’s floor is made up of a combination of white marble under the dome’s arches, the lantern tower and the keystones; and polished San Viçens stone everywhere else.
During the building work, mural paintings that had been hidden by overlapping recent interventions were found and restored.
