La Barraca Restaurant

Description Technical file

Ceramic, salt, wood, esparto grass, wicker, light, breeze, hammock, terrace, sunlight, shade and sea re the basic points of reference of this intervention in which the proximity to the Mediterranean sea floods the entire space and takes a starring role in it.

The La Barraca restaurant is situated in La Barceloneta, the district with the greatest Mediterranean ties of the city of Barcelona, and the driving force of this project was to design a space in which all the materials would transmit this unmistakable scent and taste inherent to the district, combining these elements in a single open-plan space situated in front of the sea.

Another fundamental aspect of the thoughts that have gone into this project was transmitting through its interior a reference to craftsmanship, both at culinary and at decorative level. With this objective an open kitchen was designed in which one can see and smell the preparation of the dish about to be eaten, the clear mixture of cooking smells and sounds.

This kitchen, in its external part and in its open way, also serves as a storage unit for all the utensils required for the service, in such a way as to concentrate them all in a single module.

In front of this kitchen and as a “barrier-free” extension, is the dining room. The intention was for any table there to enjoy the same visuals offered and breathed by the great window that presides over the establishment. The idea was for all tables to be in a privileged position and looking to the sea, regardless of where the diner was sitting. To this end the distribution of a “communal dining room” was chosen without losing out on intimacy and harmony.

In regard to furniture and decorative elements, different types of tables have been handcrafted, rescuing wood and frames of different sizes and using old forged feet, wooden and wicker chairs, ceramic lamps and esparto screens as well as a collection of old navigation charts of the Mediterranean and Catalan coast together with a series of early 20th-century photographic archives of the Barceloneta.
