Cèntric Bar

Pilar Libano, arquitecta

Description Technical file

If the challenge of an interior design work consists of retaining the soul of the space as well as the charm possessed by places with history, there is no doubt that this project constitutes a paradigm of this way of working the architecture of interior spaces.

A mythical space with a lengthy history in the city of Barcelona, the Cèntric Bar began its history in the Raval district when it opened in the year 1862 and, ever since, this bar has been a meeting point of both the local inhabitants of the district and of artists and intellectuals.

While maintaining this soul, we have tried to make people perceive the establishment as “the same one as ever”, though in truth it is not the “same establishment as ever” because it has another use, another function and also another style, another offering. It had never been a restaurant but now it is.

New kitchen and lavatories, as well as a new back space for the restaurant, are the protagonists of new spaces in which everything is different yet everything maintains that spirit of former times. A great job performed on installations and new technologies finally allow these to disappear from the eyes of the visitor.

It has been treated to become a sustainable space in compliance with the Leed certificate.

The furniture has been arranged in such a way that chairs in different styles and from different eras coexist with the establishment’s original objects, together with elements designed in a clearly contemporary language. In addition, the intervention as a whole has been worked to become a space of sustainable characteristics that has gained the Leed certificate.

In the space occupied by the bar, with its warm and welcoming features, there is a sash window that favours dialogue with the street. The mounting blocks and the wooden bar have been recovered, as has the hydraulic flooring, while the photographs of the establishment’s history and of the owners’ family constitute a nod to the past.
