Villa-Extramuros Country ghest house

Description Technical file

Circumscribed to the typical architecture of southern Portugal, this construction is characterised by the use of a few materials and its formal simplicity, both in general and in its details, which allow it to establish a dialogue with the domestic and vernacular architecture of the region.

Lacking in any major aquifers, the region of Alentejo extends over an undulating territory punctuated by small hills. Human occupation has always sought out the highest points in this area, above all for defensive and visibility reasons, and it is also on the slope of a small hill, on the outskirts of the old village of Arraiolos, where Villa Extramuros has been built, surrounded by extensive olive groves. Its shape and scale recover the concept of the old stately homes of the Alentejo.

With two storeys, the building has been designed as the main dwelling by its owners and also as a small five-bedroom hotel. Is white façade, with few openings, give it a distinctive and abstract appearance. Two cut-outs of large dimensions in the corners of the ground floor uncover interior paces and in one of these cut-outs is the main entrance. Through two large openings in the ground floor, in the dining room and lounge respectively, a relationship is established with the surrounding landscape, with the olive groves and wide pastureland and also, in the distance, with the hill on which the village stands.

The spatial organisation of the old convents, with refectory, chapter room and kitchen grouped around a central cloister, is reproduced in the contemporary programme of Villa Extramuros, maintaining the same functions. The reception, kitchen, dining room and lounge are arranged around a landscaped courtyard that features an external staircase leading to the upper storey. Here, circulation takes place on the outside around the central courtyard. On the south side the volume opens up to allow enough sunlight to penetrate into the courtyard.
