Aquavox Hydrothermal Centre

Mariano González Presencia y José Javier Esparza Unsaín, arquitectos.

Description Technical file

This project for a hydrothermal centre situated in the heart of Pamplona’s old district establishes an open and fluid spatial dialogue with surroundings in which the emergence of functional programmes of these characteristics and dimensions could generate urban conflict.
The building houses sports and health facilities under municipal initiative and ownership. The site, with a façade giving on to calle San Agustín in Pamplona, had been emptied when the old ‘Euskal Jai’ pelota court was demolished after the City Hall acquired it. Beyond the provisions of the municipal byelaws on alignments and overhangs in the plot, the Special Protection and Interior Reform Plan of the Old District of Pamplona specified the creation of an interior longitudinal passage or street running perpendicular to the main facades. The project for the hydrothermal centre assumes these guidelines while seeking to be sensitive to the possible effect on neighbouring constructions through the creation of recesses and the opening of courtyards in the most compromising locations generated in its surroundings.
The project revolves around the effort made to obtain sufficient natural light for the suite of interior spaces of the building, overcoming the difficulties and constrictions inherent to its location and basing itself on a principle of creating sectors for the volume according to longitudinal lots running perpendicular to the streets. Deduced from this is the idea that governs the section of the building’s main block, a compact section that groups together and connects its most central and largest spaces to recreate a large lineal container that evokes the volume of the old pelota court, crosses the plot from one side to the other, brings together the spaces with the greatest entity within the programme and facilitates its functional, spatial and visual intercommunication.
The final result of the project offers the image of a building divided into two parts by an internal street and connected via raised walkways. The two parts are delimited by the alignments with this interior street, respecting the guidelines generated by the typical urban facades found in a historic city.
The volumes stand on a reinforced concrete base that houses the machinery and is situated on the ground floor, taking into account the prohibition of building excavated spaces issued by the bodies in charge of preserving the archaeological heritage. On this base, the facades of the two volumes that comprise the project open in a systematic, patterned way by adopting a structural solution based on a perimeter succession of metallic tubular profiles that conceal the joinery and provide a high degree of transparency for its internal spaces.
