Casa Barcelona shows four prototypes
of sustainable dwellings

To create prototypes of dwellings that are innovative, sustainable and social, adaptable to the needs of different types of people. That was the brief that, under the direction of the architect Ignacio Paricio, four architectural practices tackled to present their best proposals with the objective of demonstrating that a structure, new or existing, can be occupied by various types of highly differing dwellings in terms of programme, content and cost. All of them were fitted into an identical space, an infrastructure composed of a 300m2-module over two heights created from prefab pieces and devised by the architectural practice Felip Pich-Aguilera. A joint effort aimed at investigating the use of new materials in order to reduce costs and apply sustainability criteria.

La Casa de las Cosas (The House of Things), by Sauerbruch & Hutton: The German practice directed by the architects Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton built a dwelling devised for an elderly 70-year-old man who lives on his own. The apartment took into account the different situations that may arise, such as problems of mobility, visits from relatives or the need for space in which to store objects and souvenirs collected throughout a lifetime.

The Rolling House by Andrés Jaque: A house shared by young professionals, a boat house, a house for Erasmus students. Sharing a house is becoming increasingly commonplace and defies the shape in which the dwelling has been devised in recent decades. This idea has attracted the attention of the architect Andrés Jaque, who proposes an apartment dominated by the communal spaces. In a prominent spot, in the centre of the dwelling, is the bath-planter or an intermittent lavatory that closes only when it is about to be used. All this does not renounce the small private spaces, with capsules transformed into individual rooms that can be transformed into a small sitting room or a wardrobe.

Space for relations and sharing by Carme Pinós: The dwelling conceived as a flexible order that adapts to the different events that occur during the day. The practice of Carme Pinós developed an apartment model for a family with two children that sought to avoid conventional partitioning rules. It was divided into three zones: in the first one were the bathrooms, kitchen, cupboards and corridor; in the second, the rest of the dwelling as an open-plan space and the third one was used as the external facade to form a strip for working and a storage space.

Simple Manufacture Apartments de Xavier Claramunt: LThe proposal of this dwelling focused on a young, childless couple, built with a minimum of indispensable facilities and the minimum possible amount of material for living in it comfortably. Xavier Claramunt created a dwelling that focuses on sustainability criteria, with interesting proposals such as the ceiling, the double facade or combined fabric partitions throughout the dwelling.

Green Box, towards a new architecture

“The first modular, prefabricated, transportable garden dwelling that does not generate waste”. That is the definition given by the architect Luis de Garrido of his new construction proposal, which seeks to become an international benchmark in the field of sustainable architecture, as it comprehensively complies with all the known indicators. The prototype is self-sufficient and does not consume conventional energy, as it is supplied by means of geothermal and solar energy. It does not require connection to the electrical grid and offers thermal self-regulation thanks to its design, created to obtain the best possible bioclimatic performance.
The interior is completely open-plan and its architectural structure allows for any type of interior partitioning. In this way the dwelling can be expanded, reduced or modified without the need for building works and does not generate waste. It can also be easily repaired, as all its parts are dry-assembled and can be recovered, repaired and replaced by others. The load bearing structure is made from prefab reinforced concrete panels, wood-cement sandwich panels and metallic panels.
One of the most visible elements of the structure is its landscaped, sloping and accessible roof that features a continuity with the surrounding ground and its vertical garden, built from cellular polyethylene panels screwed on to a metallic load bearing structure. Both elements are made from local Mediterranean plant species, require minimal maintenance and provide a suitable balance between insulation, thermal inertia, breathability, oxygenation and lighting.

Construmat 2009 Prizes

The 13th edition of the Construmat Prizes to Technological Innovation recognised in the Civil Engineering category the construction and development of the Gran Vía road and plaza de Europa of l’Hospitalet in Barcelona. The jury particularly valued the improvements in the area that have managed to open up this entrance route and renew the appearance of one of the accesses to the city of Barcelona, as well as improving the environment of the avenue. The works have been carried out by the team formed by the architects Humbert Costes, Albert Viaplana and David Viaplana.
The Construmat Prize to Construction, in turn, went to the Spain Pavilion at the Zaragoza 2008 Expo, the work of the architect Francisco J.Mangado, for representing a clear commitment to ecological and sustainable architecture without renouncing an aesthetically spectacular look. This construction includes peculiar elements such as the clay pillars of the exterior facade, which help to create a microclimate that insulates it from outdoor temperatures, as well as the roof, transformed into a container of energy through solar and water collectors.
In the Products for Construction section, the Construction Processes Prize went to the Fipro Platform of the company Layher. The Omega Zeta panel by Circa has won the prize to the best product for Structures and Enclosures and the ECO surface by Cosentino has been recognised with the prize to the best product for Insulation, Cladding and Installations.

The New Wine Architecture

The SIDI space hosted the exhibition “The New Wine Architecture” organised by On Diseño magazine. The show featured a selection of 27 architectural works connected with the world of wine-making built on Spanish territory in the past ten years by architects such as Zaha Hadid, Rafael Moneo or Santiago Calatrava. The exhibition featured, besides the wineries that dot the Spanish territory, a centre for the promotion of wines, a boutique and a hotel.
This was the second occasion for viewing this exhibition, which was shown for the first time in the polyvalent SIDI space, the SIDISPOT, in the German city of Cologne as part of Passagen 2.009.
In addition, a selection of the most outstanding works of the show, together with a compilation of wine and cava wine labels and bottles, will be the protagonists of issue no. 302 of On Diseño magazine, due to go on sale in late June.

Technical Sessions

This year’s edition of the fair featured an extensive programme of technical sessions, seminars, conferences and congresses that tackled key issues for the future of the sector. Topics such as the energy efficiency of buildings, sustainability criteria or the extension of normalisation were given an in-depth treatment during these six days.
Particularly noteworthy is the announcement by the Housing Minister, Beatriz Corredor, of the coming into effect of the new noise regulation, which triples the requirement for acoustic insulation in dwellings. Also treated in-depth were topics such as the prevention of risks in the workplace or the current situation of the sector, with a session in which different representatives from the Public Administrations presented their aid programmes for tackling the crisis.
