Alvaro Siza, winner of the National Architecture Award 2019


The Ministry of Development has presented the National Architecture Award for 2019 to the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Among other recognitions, he boasts the top prize in his speciality, the Pritzker Prize, which he won in 1992.

Born in 1933 in Motosinhos, Portugal, he studied architecture at the Porto Higher School of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1966 and where he started teaching. Siza has also been a visiting professor at the universities of Lausanne, Pennsylvania, Bogotá and Harvard.

Prominent among his most representative works are the Porto Faculty of Architecture, the library of Aveiro University, Portugal; the Rectorate building of Alicante University; the faculty of Communication Sciences of Santiago de Compostela; the main hall of the University of the Basque Country, in Bilbao; the Manzana del Revellín Auditorium in Ceuta; the Santo Tirso Volunteer Firefighter Station; and the Theatre-Auditorium in Llinars del Vallès, Barcelona.
