Jump the Gap Awards 2017

The seventh edition of the Jump the Gap international design contest, organised by Roca together with BCD Barcelona Design Centre, staged its prize-giving ceremony on 17 October at the Disseny Hub Barcelona.

Created in 2004 with the purpose of supporting young architects and designers, the contest is open to students and professionals under 35 years of age and is divided into two main categories: Professional and Students. Since 2015 the Special Prize for Sustainability is also presented, awarded by the We Are Water Foundation.

Prize-winning projects in the three categories:

Professional: ‘Panacea’ (Mohammadreza Shahmohammadi, Iran): bathtub made from elastic material that can adapt to any space.

Student: ‘Lambda’ (Denis Lara Molina, Spain): steriliser that cleans users’ hands through a shortwave frequency light without the need for water.

Special Prize for Sustainability: ‘Delta’ (Michal Hondo and Kinga Grzybowska, Poland). A shower with extensible screens integrating a dehumidifier that transforms water steam into water.

The event brought together professionals from the world of design and architecture, among them the members of the jury: Patrik Schumacher, director of Zaha Hadid Architects and chairman of the jury; Isabel Roig, managing director of BCD Barcelona Design Centre; Benedetta Tagliabue, director of EMBT and of the Enric Miralles Foundation; Josep Congost, director of design and innovation at Roca; Valentin Vodev, founder of the company VELLO, specialising in the production and sale of bicycles and other innovative mobility products; and Xavier Torras, communication and brand director at Roca and director of the We Are Water Foundation.

At the start of the function Patrik Schumacher, one of the most important architects on the scene today, with more than 30 years’ experience in the Zaha Hadid Architects practice, gave a ‘jumpthegap talk’ with the title of ‘Tectonism. Engineering and Fabrication Logics as Stylistic Drivers’ where he discussed his viewpoint on the current scene and the future outlook for design and architecture. The ‘jumpthegap talks’ are encounters with prominent professionals from the fields of design and architecture staged in different cities around the world within the international framework of Jump the Gap.
