Designer for a day

JUL/17

The Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda offered representatives of the specialised press from different countries the opportunity to become vehicle designers for a day.

The appointment was for late June at the Mazda Design Studio, in the German town of Oberursel. Here a team of professionals from this automotive brand imparted a workshop on the steps they take in conceptualising, designing and manufacturing their models, putting special attention on the technique of clay modelling to find each model’s essence and endow it with a handcrafted soul as well as collecting objects of every kind in a quest for colours, shapes and textures to find special materials such as the “metallic wood” of the dashboard in the new Mazda CX-5. Each attendee could even recreate their ideal car, advised by a member of the Mazda team.

Mazda’s methodology is based on Kodo design (the soul of movement). Emotions, soul, art, culture, pure lines, simplicity and Japanese tradition and crafts sum up this philosophy, which can excite people with every creation, with each new vehicle prototype, just like a work of art.
