Winners of the ArtsFAD Awards 2017

The 9th edition of the ArtsFAD Awards 2017, organised by the A-FAD (the FAD’s Artists and Artisans) with the aim of stimulating the creation of artistic works of excellence for their concept, material quality and technical execution culminated in the prize-giving ceremony for the winners on 28 June at the Disseny Hub Barcelona.

The work “Pulsión” by the artist Sara Coleman won first prize. The jury emphasised the fact that it is a contemporary piece, the treatment given to the material and volumetry as well as the complexity of execution and the simplicity of the beauty it transmits at the same time.

Second prize went jointly to Trinidad Contreras for “Diamond Amphora” and to Mireia Corominas for “No hay Garantías de que no nos corrompamos” (No guarantees that we won’t be corrupted). The ArtsFAD Opinion Prize awarded by the public went to “Fetitxes de Claus” (Key Fetishes) by Mónica Porta.

A total of 33 shortlisted works were eligible for the awards in an edition that stood out for the high levels of participation, with 105 works entered, and for the excellent quality of the artistic pieces.

This year the awards presented some novelties in regard to previous editions, starting with the name—previously called ArtFAD Awards—which added the plural “s”, seeking to emphasise the inclusion of all the arts. Nor was there any differentiation in categories between professionals and students at this edition. Another novelty was the type of pieces that could be entered in the competition: they had to be unique works that presented a profound knowledge of the craft and were an object created from working the material without a useful function per se.

All the shortlisted and prize-winning works will be on display at “The Best Design of the Year” exhibition at the Disseny Hub Barcelona until 29 October.
