Shortlist of Living Places – Simon Architecture Prize


The shortlist of Living Places – Simon Architecture Prize, promoted by the electrical material manufacturer Simon and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, has been announced. It seeks to distinguish architecture projects that enhance the comfort of the residents that occupy them.

In the “Collective Places” category, the 5 finalists are: Ceuta Public Library, in Ceuta, by Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos; Co-Housing - Wohnprojekt Wien, in Vienna, by Einszueins Architektur; Dressing up the square, in Olot, Girona, by unparelld'arquitectes; Madrid Rio, in Madrid, by Burgos & Garrido, Porras La Casta, Rubio & A-Sala and West 8; and Beckett Room, Theatre and International Drama Centre, in Barcelona, by Flores & Prats.

In the “Personal Places” category, the 5 finalists are: Crematorium Hofheide, in Nieuwrod, by RCR Arquitectes and Coussé & Goris; Full Moon, Olot, by unparelld'arquitectes; Las Huertas Apartment. Housing Renovation in Majadahonda, Madrid, by José Manuel Fiori of Hanimal Creative; Provinciehuis of North-Brabant, 's-Hertogenbosch, by KAAN Architecten; and Transformation of 530 dwellings, block G, H, I, in Bordeaux, by Lacaton&Vassal with Frédéric Druot and Christophe Hutin.

104 works built in 16 European countries were entered in the competition. The judging panel analysed all proposals through videos, drawings, photographs and texts presented by the participants to draw up the shortlist of 10 entries.

The two winners (one in each of the contest’s two categories) will take part in the ceremony due to take place in Barcelona’s Mies van der Rohe Pavilion on 22 December. This event will conclude the functions of Simon’s centenary celebrations.
