World Press Photo 2016

SEPT/2016

After their display in May at the Fundación Cajasol in Seville, the photographs recognised in the 59th edition of the World Press Photo were exhibited in three other Spanish cities: Madrid (Lasede Coam), Vitoria-Gasteiz (Centro Cultural Montehermoso) and Barcelona (Centre de Cultura Contemporània).

5,775 photographers from 128 countries participated this year, with more than 82,000 images falling into eight categories: Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, People, Sports and Spot News.

The top award in the photojournalism contest, considered the most important one in the world, went to 'Hope for a new life', a poignant snapshot by the Australian Warren Richardson that captures all the drama of refugees in Europe with the image of a refugee passing a baby through the barbed wire that separates the border between Horgoš, in Serbia, and Röszke, in Hungary, on the night of 28 August 2015.

The entire collection of the prize-winning images can be viewed on the website: www.worldpressphoto.org/collection/photo/2016
