The prizes for the 10th BIAU have been awarded

The 10th Latin American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (BIAU) will be held in the Brazilian city of São Paulo during the first days of July. This year the contest will focus on showing the traces left by people on cities and on the territory as a result of migrations and movements of every kind. Hence the theme of this edition, “Displacements/Dislocations”. The Biennial is a Spanish Government initiative that has the main purpose of raising awareness of the current and prospective situation of architecture and urbanism throughout the Latin American community.

The award-winners of this edition were announced in April. Noteworthy among them was the granting of the Latin American Architecture and Urbanism Award to Eduardo Souto de Moura at the proposal of the School of Architecture of Lisbon University. The jury emphasised the Portuguese architect’s ability to “establish enriching and novel relations between the different scales, places and times in which architecture has to develop, experimenting with materials and structures, which are expressed through an emotion-filled language".

Of the more than 1,000 projects entered, twenty-six works of architecture with varied typologies were recognised: dwellings, culture centres, theatres, teaching buildings, office buildings, industrial and religious buildings and many more. A considerable number of publications was also recognised: six books, two periodicals and a video collection.
