30th anniversary reconstruction Barcelona Mies van der Rohe Pavilion

MAY/2016

This year is the 30th anniversary of the reconstruction of the Barcelona Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, three decades that have shaped the characteristics of today’s Pavilion and the various types of initiatives that are undertaken in its unique spaces.

To mark the anniversary, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation has organised a series of festive events, which will launch on 23 May with “El Secreto de las Medusas” (The Secret of the Medusas), a dance spectacle choreographed by Sabine Dahrendorf and which will be staged until 26 May.

The evening of 1 June will see the inauguration of “Columnas Cristalizadas” (Crystallised Columns), an event for rereading the Pavilion through a reinterpretation of the columns that had stood in front of the original pavilion. The festivity will feature the spectacle mounted by the dancer Toni Mira, who will offer a choreography combining his three passions: dance, video screenings and architecture.

2 to 5 June will be open days so that any citizen and especially the district’s neighbours have the opportunity of enjoying and becoming acquainted with the Pavilion.

To close all the activities organised for the commemoration, in October a symposium will be staged, with conferences and debates on the pavilion and on Mies van der Rohe. These academic events will be placed in context in an exhibition due to open in September, featuring a historic overview with images, documents and pieces from the time of the original Pavilion and the interventions undertaken over time.

Lastly, and as part of the celebrations marking the 30 years since its reconstruction, the Pavilion will participate in a series of cultural events and activities organised by the city over the summer months, such as the LOOP Festival, the SONAR and a film series.
