Julius Shulman’s photography

“Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” is an exploration of the life and career of one of the principal architecture photographers of the 20th century and who was also a naturalist, educator and commentator on the urban form while maintaining a close relationship with the architects of the modern movement, mainly those from southern California such as Gregory Ain, John Lautner, Richard Neutra and RM Schindler.

Directed by Eric Bricker and accompanied by a book written by Will Paice, this documentary shows us how Shulman succeeded in capturing through his images the work of almost all modern and progressive American architects since 1936, among them Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Ghery, thus contributing to promoting the city of Los Angeles and the “Southern California Lifestyle” during the 1950s and ‘60s.
