Between filters and screens

A building which “aims to express itself as pure structure, without coatings or finishes”. Girder-walls of exposed concrete and filters are the elements which characterise the façades of the building, which was conceived as a unit of filters and screens, outdoor as well as indoor, which diffuse the natural light and grant its inhabitants intimacy.

The new headquarters of the Filmoteca de Catalunya by mateoarquitectura, directed by Josep Lluís Mateo, is located in the historic Raval district in Barcelona. This area has enjoyed a rehabilitation and modernization process during the past few years.

The 6000 m² plot gathers the services which until now were spread over different locations of the city and concentrates them into a single building, including the projection room, the offices and library. It will also contain the Centre for the Promotion of Popular and Traditional Catalan Culture, and the General Directorate of Cultural Promotion and Cooperation, both entities of the Culture Department.

With the objective of modernizing the building’s visual impact, it rests lower than its neighbouring edifices. It is comprised of two volumes with rectangular floor plans: one is completely underground, while the other rises above the square.

The first floor of the underground volume houses the temporary exhibition hall and classrooms, while underneath, on the second underground floor, we reach the two projection rooms; one with 360 seats, the other with 184.

In the volume on the slope, a large skylight illuminates the patio containing the escalators which lead from the hall to the upper floors.

On the first floor we find the Cinema library and the Delmiro de Caralt area, containing spaces for reference and internal work, and the permanent exhibition hall, which displays a collection of objects dating back to the origins of cinema, as well as a set of patrimonial documents.

The second and third floors contain the administrative areas.

On the centre of the ground floor of the building, which gives out on to Salvador Seguí square, a spacious lobby gives access to the reception, the cloakrooms, the specialized library and the cafeteria, which will also be accessible directly from the street.
