Il Fiore di Novembre

Six multicoloured polycarbonate petals compose the central foot of the table Fleur de Novembre, designed for Kartell by the Italian Fabio Novembre and presented during the Milano Design Week. This was one of the novelties included in the retrospective installation Il Fiore di Novembre at the Triennale Design Museum and conceived by the designer himself as a spectacular open flower. New visitors could enjoy its theatrical effect and observe, from a small staircase, the movement of the rest of the attendees around the installation, as if they were other actors in a colourful scene. The mosaic petals of the flower were repeated throughout the space and featured texts, illustrations and images that approached the inception of some of the Italian's most outstanding furniture projects and designs. In this way, Novembre not only set out on a simple presentation of his objects but also invited the visitors to enter directly into the heart of this flower, into his particular world, exploring in an original manner his creative processes, his obsessions and the project references that guide his work.

Tokyo Fiber Senseware

With the goal of exploring the use of the most advanced and highly developed artificial fibres, the Japanese Kenya Hara gathered together 17 artists, among them designers of the standing of Ross Lovegrove and Antonio Citterio. Each one of them had to respond to the question of how to use the artificial fibres of seven Japanese technological companies in order to showcase and emphasise their potential to the maximum degree.
The result was an attractive exhibition that surprised the visitor, who was led to touch, experiment and become acquainted with the materials on show. A shock to the senses, which began to work as soon as the threshold of the entrance was crossed, where small drops of water hypnotised the visitor as they fell like pearls on a black fabric, creating the word Senseware. A clear declaration of his intentions. Even though the signs prohibited touching the different designs, very few resisted the temptation of touching the lawn carpeting, the masks, the inflatable tablecloths, the mannequins or the extremely light chairs. After all, who would resist holding the future in one's hands?

Salone Satellite Prizes

The SaloneSatellite chose the Norwegian Daniel Rybakken as the most promising designer at its twelfth edition. The event brought together under the concept of wellbeing the designs of over seven hundred young creatives and twenty-two international design schools. Rybakken presented Surface Daylight, a light panel with light in the surface that simulates streaming daylight into a room. His objective is to neutralise the contrast between indoors and outdoors and generate a positive effect for the user, especially for those who live a large part of the year away from sunlight. The jury of the Design Report Award, integrated by the designers and trade professionals Giulio Iachetti, Janne Kyttänen, Barbara Schmidt, Oskar Zieta and Lars Quadejacob, also gave a special mention to the Japanese Arihiro Miyake for Fort, an acoustic partition system formed from recycled PET bottle fibre units joined together by means of magnets. The German Mark Braun won another distinction for his stone-shaped Ö jewellery case and his Pyrus lamp, made from papier-maché and with angular shapes. The last mention went to the Belgian Raphaël Charles, who presented Rug 20/30 composed of standard calibre 20/30 pieces of coal made from PE foam and felt, spread loosely on the floor.

Talks on design

The Fair was this year again a space for debate and encounter among the major protagonists of design and architecture. Abitare magazine presented a series of talks in which renowned personalities from this field took part. For four days topics were debated such as the teaching of design, with professors from Italian and international design schools. The 360º chair produced by Magis and designed by Konstantin Grcic was put on trial. The producer and designer sat on the witness bench and a prosecutor and a counsel for the defence presented its virtues and defects before leading into an interesting debate. Also fruitful was Design Domino 2, which took inspiration in the game of dominoes to create a quick question and answer session among some of the most outstanding players from the world of design and visual culture, who spoke of the relationship between Design and Crisis.
