Cevisama 2018

The international trade fair for the ceramics, bathroom fittings and natural stone industry featured the largest showcase of recent years and more than 90,000 visitors at 2018 staging (from 5 to 9 February). A total of ten halls displayed the best offerings in ceramic flooring and cladding for interior design and architecture, plus the latest trends in bathroom and kitchen fittings, natural stone, raw materials, enamels, frits and ceramic colours as well as machinery.

We highlight the CevisamaLab Architecture and Design Forum qualitative step forward by featuring internationally renowned figures from the fields of design, interior decoration and architecture, such as Eduardo Souto de Moura and Rafael Moneo, among others.

The collaboration with the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University in this staging of Trans/Hitos enabled the creation of a space in which large-format, thin pieces were the basis for generating interlinked arches that constitute a pergola. Furthermore, Wesam Asali, winner of the ASCER 2017 Awards in the dissertation project category, displayed the “Ceramic Vault” space where ceramic tiles formed part of the load-bearing structure.

ASCER contributed with two initiatives with the purpose of promoting the use of ceramics in a collective engaged in disciplines such as architecture, technical architecture, design and construction: a space devoted to displaying the projects from the Ceramics Chairs and the prize-winning projects in the 16th Ceramics Prizes.

Finally, the Trans/Hitos 18 ceramics and architecture fair was present at the new Cevisama staging under the banner of “Cycles”. The concept illustrated the period in which architecture currently finds itself: once the last stage has passed, we glimpse a new cycle in which it appears that what was learnt in the past few years will have considerable weight. This learning process entails a new way of doing architecture, far removed from the “major” commissions; an architecture that thinks of people, that tries to address their problems.
