The Casa da Arquitectura opens with exhibitions its new site in Matosinhos

The cultural organisation Casa da Arquitectura (House of Architecture, the Portuguese Centre of Architecture) was created in 2007 for the social promotion of the discipline. After a decade in which it has received considerable institutional support, the House sets out on a new stage in style with the opening of its new site, the Real Vinícola in Matosinhos (Oporto metropolitan area), an old industrial complex built in the late 19th century refurbished according to a project drawn up by Guilherme Machado Vaz. Among the major immediate goals of the House of Architecture are the creation of an Architecture Archive and two collections, one of Portuguese 20th- to 21st-century architecture and another on Brazilian architecture. It has also established a teaching programme imparted by its educational service and promotes all kinds of activities.

With the works on the Real Vinícola completed, the House of Architecture opens its site with a comprehensive cultural and festive programme, prominent in which is the opening of two exhibitions. The first one, entitled Poder Arquitectura (Architecture Power) and curated by the architects Jorge Carvalho, Pedro Bandeira and Ricardo Carvalho, is an in-depth examination of the relationship between power and architecture and seeks to map the powers that impact on the creation of architectural artefacts. Around 100 projects from around the world are represented in the show through maquettes, drawings, videos or reviews.

The House of Architecture also hosts the exhibition of the 10th Latin American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU) which in this edition revolves around “Displacements” under the direction of the architects Ángela García de Paredes and Ignacio Pedrosa. A total of 1111 projects participated in the Biennial, of which 26 were recognised.

In addition to all this, the opening of the House of Architecture includes many other activities, from concerts to film screenings, guided tours or the staging of talks such as the public conversation with Eduardo Souto de Moura on 19 November.

The Poder Arquitectura exhibition is open from 18 November 2017 to 18 March 2018, and the exhibition of the X BIAU from 18 November 2017 to 4 February 2018.
