Brossa Poetry

Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919/98) developed his artistic pracice since the nineteen-forties in a socio-political context marked by Franco’s dictatorship and in a cultural setting characterised by the absence of avant-garde and innovative proposals. A frequent collaborator with other artists—musicians, filmmakers, dancers, humourists and even magicians—, his work is constantly playing at breaking with convention and the limits between disciplines, striving for an aesthetic renewal based on literary and artistic investigation. Right up to the time of his death, he never ceased to search for new forms of expression and to experiment with different mediums.

In the year 2011, the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, the city’s Contemporary Art Museum, received the repository held by the Joan Brossa Foundation, a collection of the artist’s legacy. The collection contains manuscript works, documents, correspondence and his personal library, among other materials, and constitutes an unequalled tool for exploring his hugely extensive production.

The “Poesia Brossa” exhibition aims to showcase the polyhedral artist’s work by putting the emphasis on reconsidering his influence and interrelations with the practice of the artists Marcel Mariën, Nicanor Parra and Ian Hamilton-Finlay. Such links allow us to establish numerous parallelisms, seek dialogues and tensions and emphasise the performance aspects of Brossa's poetic practice.
